Selling a digital subscription means connecting the offer, payment, access and renewal. Before choosing software, describe what the customer gets, what they pay and the period covered. Then assign each task, including sales documents and applicable tax questions.
Make the offer easy to understand
Consider a fictional monthly resource library. Explain what is included, when access starts, what happens on cancellation and how to contact support. “Premium access” is not enough if the buyer cannot tell what they will be able to use.
Record the selling entity, target markets and whether customers are individuals or businesses. These details also help establish the responsibilities attached to the sale.
Assign the work
| Task | What needs to be decided |
|---|---|
| Signup | Visible offer, price, frequency and terms |
| Payment | Supported method and verified result |
| Access | Service period opened after confirmation |
| Renewal | Date, amount and handling of unknown or unsuccessful results |
| Cancellation | Effective date and effect on future charges |
| Documents and tax | Required information, tools and review responsibility |
Test one complete signup. The customer should understand the purchase, and you should be able to match the payment to the correct service period.
Payment processing does not automatically handle VAT
A payment processor and a tax service perform different tasks. Certain services sold to EU consumers by a business outside the EU may require considering the non-Union OSS scheme. The European Commission explains the schemes and eligibility. Confirm the treatment of your specific sale with your tax adviser.
Also establish who is the seller. A service selling in its own name has a different role from software helping your business collect payments. Read the contractual responsibilities rather than relying on the word “platform”.
Prepare month two before launching month one
Decide what message follows an unsuccessful payment, what must be checked before retrying and how access is handled. Our renewal guide covers that journey. If you are still comparing software, see subscription payment options.
Preparing to launch your service? Tell us what you offer, how customers get access and where you will sell. We can review the payment setup and the work needed to connect it.
