A trial becomes a paid service when payment is confirmed and access matches the purchased offer. Reaching checkout or adding a card is an intermediate step, not the same outcome.
What should users know before starting?
Explain the duration, included features, later price and action required to continue. In a fictional seven-day example, “Seven days free, then €20 per month” still needs to say whether payment starts automatically or the user must subscribe.
The wording should match the real journey and applicable terms. Do not hide that distinction on a screen the customer sees only when the trial ends.
With or without a payment method?
Without a stored method, trial expiry may lead to plan selection and payment. If a method is collected earlier, explain what is being authorised and when a charge may occur. Adding it does not prove a payment was made or authorise every later charge.
Separate the states

Test a confirmation arriving after trial expiry. Access should stay connected to the result, and a stale screen should not cause another charge.
Measure conversion properly
Define a trial cohort and observation window. Count how many reach a confirmed first payment and then receive the corresponding access. Track checkout visits separately. This helps distinguish payment friction from activation failures.
