Pausing a subscription: payments, access and restarting

Define what stops, how long the pause lasts and how a subscription resumes. Use clear rules for payment, service access and the next renewal.

Pausing a subscription is only a clear instruction when you explain what stops: charging, service access or both. Also define when the pause starts, what happens to the paid period and how the subscription resumes.

Three separate decisions

Decision Question to resolve
Stop future charges Does the customer keep access?
Suspend access Does the payment schedule continue, change or stop?
Cancel When does the relationship end, and what remains outstanding?

Do not use one status for different consequences. Suspending a service does not necessarily remove outstanding amounts; those need handling under the applicable terms.

Two fictional schedules

Pause after the paid period: the customer has access from 1 to 31 May. The pause starts on 1 June. In this example, no June charge is scheduled and access stops on that date.

Pause charging while retaining access: if your business offers this, define the duration and whether the unpaid period is free or handled another way. Do not leave customers to infer this from a “Pause” button.

These examples describe possible business rules, not features available in every tool.

Define how restarting works

Specify the restart date, next amount and period covered. If you offer a prorated amount, verify the calculation before promising it. Restarting does not necessarily preserve the original billing day.

What should the confirmation show?

A useful message states when the pause starts, when access ends and what happens to the next charge. For example: “Your pause starts on the date shown. You’ll have access until then. The next renewal is paused under your selected option.” Replace these references with actual dates and consequences before displaying the message.

Check the schedule and access, not just a dashboard label. A previously scheduled task should not continue using an outdated instruction.
