A payment gateway fits your store when it can take payment and keep the order consistent with the result. Before choosing by price or brand recognition, examine your platform, bank and the integration work involved.
Start with the store you already have
Record the platform and version, checkout-related plugins, product types, shipping and sales arrangements. Include the specific problem you need to solve: a missing payment option, orders not updating or too much manual administration.
You do not need to describe your entire business to review payment. You do need to identify a sale that must work from start to finish.
Ask for demonstrable compatibility
| Question | A useful answer |
|---|---|
| Does it support my platform? | Compatible connector and versions, or a defined integration scope |
| Can an Andorran business open an account? | Eligibility requirements for the company’s country |
| Does it support my bank? | Required account, service and permitted operations |
| What follows payment? | Order status and source of confirmation |
| How do refunds work? | Actual workflow, permissions and records |
| Who maintains it? | Owner, updates and support |
For each option, record the documentation or proposal, the date checked and any requirements still awaiting confirmation. This gives you comparable answers and shows what needs checking again.
A provider mentioning Shopify or WooCommerce does not prove every feature works on that platform. Ask about your setup, particularly subscriptions or a customised checkout.
Follow one test order
Take a fictional order with two products and delivery. The total sent for payment must match the order. After confirmation, the store should retain the connection to the transaction. A refund should be traceable to the same sale.
Also test leaving checkout without completing payment. Reaching a final page should not, by itself, mark an order as paid.
Keep or adapt the platform?
Keep the parts that handle your catalogue, orders and administration well. Consider adaptation where there is a specific incompatibility, a difficult maintenance dependency or a journey the current setup cannot support. Migration also has costs: content, data, integrations and learning a new system.
Compare the full work using our cost guide, and distinguish a gateway from subscription and document management.
